The Single Files ------------------ The microQ, Q, Qplus and rackAttack sound-sets overwrite the previous contents of the memory inside your synthesizer. Since there is more than one sound-set, you may want to mix and match sounds or just want to have a listen without overwriting your precious sounds. This was formerly impossible unless you had SoundDiver with the appropriate adaptation (BTW, this is how the sound-sets have been compiled). With the Single Files you can check all sound-sets without having to have SoundDiver or any other MIDI Librarian - a simple MIDI player or any sequencer will do (you can get a demo version of most sequencers or other free software if you don't have one). All data is stored seperately in single standard MIDI files (SMF Type 1) that should play back in any MIDI file player or sequencer at standard speed (120bpm). These files are put into a Package archive and are then again zipped together with this read-me and any other accompanying files. This is necessary to get the final archive as small as possible. Each Package archive will extract itself into an appropriately named subdirectory, so normally you do not need to create one yourself. This makes it also possible to unpack the Package archive onto a floppy disk, for instance to use the files with a hardware sequencer. The downloaded archives contain, pending availability: This read-me in both UNIX and MS-DOS text format, a MIDI file that overwrites the complete memory aka full dump, the original documentation for the soundset and the Package archive (*Package.zip) containing the singles. For Q and Qplus only, there is an additional *X-Files.zip, which contains MIDI files that will store each of the banks in the soundset onto a single QCard. This QCard should be initially empty (any sounds are overwritten anyway) to ensure that all sounds can be stored without reorganization of the memory on the QCard. For the rackAttack, additional patterns are available. These are just the patterns so that you can load them into any rackAttack programs, including programs that have only been loaded into edit buffer like the rackAttack Singles. The extra patterns available for ForumThree are demo sequences that can be used with any of the other soundsets as well. Check the ForumThree documentation for tips on how to use them efficiently. You can recall or switch off at any time to get rid of any edits you have made. If you want to store, you can do that by hand. Storing everything in a Multi (Q or microQ) can be a bit tedious, though - you need to store the Multi itself, the active DrumMap (Q only - if there is more than one DrumMap, only the first is active), any active Sounds used by the Multi and Drum Map and any active Patterns (Q only). The synth will try to store to the place this data would have in the factory sound-set. If you store any of it in a different place, you need to make sure that all references to it will also point to the new place, because a Multi for instance will reference it's sounds by memory location rather than name. If you want to do this for more than a few sounds, it would be wise to get a MIDI librarian that changes the dependencies automatically, like SoundDiver. To facilitate loading of Multi and Drum Map programs with their dependant Patterns and Sounds into the various edit buffers, there are Arrangements (filenames starting with "Arr") that do the chore for you. The Arrangements contain only data that is actually used, therefore their size can vary considerably. Large Arrangements take a while to load (a fully populated Multi with a complete DrumMap uses 47 Sounds plus 16 Patterns) and you should not disturb the Q during transmission by trying to switch modes or sounds. The names of the files are hopefully self-explanatory, as they are derived from the actual names shown on the synthesizer itself. Certain characters that can be displayed are however illegal for a filename and have thus been replaced by an underscore. Appendix ======== Unpacking the archives ---------------------- Any current Un-ZIP program should have no trouble unpacking the archives, provided they support at least PKzip v2.04 files. A few very old programs on MS-DOS might not fit that description. Some Windows archivers have problems displaying long file names or directories with many files. The symptom is that you can't see all files when looking inside the archive or that the filenames are mangled. However you should still be able to extract the archive simply by not looking into the archived directory and specifying "extract all" from the top level. How to recall things to the stored state in Multi mode (Q and microQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Switch off and back on (not recommended - takes too long). 2. Press Multimode & Peek twice (go in and out of demo mode). Does not clear Multi Edit buffer, though. 3. Just the Multi: go into Multi Edit menu and press Shift & Recall. 4. Just the Sound or DrumMap: Select the Instrument, be sure to be in Play mode or in the Sound Menu and press Shift & Recall. 5. Just the Pattern: Select the Instrument, be sure to be in Play mode or in the Sound Menu, press the Sequencer Edit Button and then press Shift & Recall. How to store things ------------------- This works like recall, just that you have to press Shift & Store. The synthesizer displays the memory slot where it will store the data. At this point you can: 1. Leave without storing by pressing Play/OK. 2. Change the memory slot by using the red dial. 3. Change the name by using the two encoders below the display. Now press Shift & Store again to actually store the data. mailto:Stromeko@Stromeko.net Achim. +<[Q+ Matrix-12 WAVE#46+305 Neuron microQkb Andromeda XTk]>+
